Union Learning Representatives
The TUC works with partners nationally, regionally and locally to increase business and service competitiveness, enhance the employability of the workforce and to build a partnership approach with employers.
What are Union Learning Representatives?
Trade Unions have developed a new role to promote learning at work, to make sure their members get the learning opportunities and training they need.

The Union Learning Representative has been instrumental in raising interest in training and development, especially among the lowest skilled workers with literacy and numeracy needs (Essential Skills Factsheet).
Why are Union Learning Representatives uniquely placed to assist with the Lifelong Learning of our workforce?

The Unions have a unique relationship with and direct access to the workforce

  • They are able to assist people who have lost confidence in learning since school, by encouraging them to try again
  • They have a direct link with employers which can foster a shared purpose
  • ULR’s have first hand knowledge of the learning and skills needs of the workforce, employers, geographical areas and sectors.
